Monastery

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

This project involved the design of an urban Benedictine Monastery for the city of St. Louis, Missouri, which was to incorporate a Soup Kitchen to serve the poor of the local neighbourhood.

In my proposal, rather than "hide" the monastic spaces away from the cacophony of the city, I would embrace the discordant elements of the surrounding cityscape, as a means to augment and highlight the contemplative spaces of the monastery's interior. A central architectural theme was developed within this context, that took the form of an "incision point" that allows the vibrancy of the city to cut through the tranquility of the monastic, encouraging interraction between Monk and city-dweller. in terms of materiality, this incision point cuts through the grey, concrete monolithic structure to reveal an inner core of brightly-coloured glass.
